  • [1] The death of Macdonald on June 6, 1891 dissolved the Third Ministry ipso facto. On June 15, 1891 Abbott accepted the Governor General's invitation, to form a Government and on 16 June the Fourth Ministry assumed office. The new Cabinet was composed entirely of ministers from the Third Ministry and with the exception of Abbott, they all retained their previous portfolios.
  • [2] Abbott was also President of the Privy Council.
  • [3] Bowell was appointed Minister of Militia and Defence on January 25, 1892.
  • [4] The Minister of the Interior was ex officio the Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs.
  • [5] Caron was appointed Postmaster General on January 25, 1892.
  • [6] Smith was appointed Minister without Portfolio on January 16, 1891; Minister of Public Works on August 14, 1891; and Minister without Portfolio on January 11, 1892.
